A blog about bringing beauty, meaning, and soul into home and garden

About Us

What is Planet Home and Garden?

Planet Home and Garden is a blog that looks at the meaning home and garden hold for us and what our design can bring to that meaning.   At Planet Home and Garden, we aim to teach and inspire, and to provide a forum for the sharing of ideas and experiences from around the globe where the focus is home and garden.  Initially, our stories will be more local as we build our network.  Our goal is not making money or to profit.

With home and garden,  we try to get beyond what is  “trendy”, “fashionable”, and “status-oriented”, to a deeper, more personal experience of home.  We aim to re-sanctify the home and garden by looking at ideas and stories where that has been done.  Home design and decoration can be done in a way that mirrors the self: its values, joys, and aspirations, and this brings sacredness.  We hope to inspire more meaning, transformation, and symbolic beauty in your home.

This website also aims to empower women.  Home has traditionally been the women’s sphere, and less valued.  By focusing on this domain, and its values of nurturing, connectedness, beauty, and healing, we empower women and encourage them to use these feminine ways and their own wisdom to transform their lives and those around them.

By reaching globally for stories about home and garden, we also hope to further the connectedness between diverse people and to foster more understanding, tolerance, and mutual acceptance.  Often cultural and religious traditions and customs divide us, but we can look instead at our common ground.  Home is such a common ground.   Diverse rituals and sacred objects brought into the home bring it meaning, and we  are inspired by how others do this.

In this age of the Web, home is no longer simply a private retreat.  Now we connect from home across the planet instantly.  We hope at this blog to also look at the affect of this new mode of communication on our private lives, and its conflicts.

For many people, what we expect from our homes and gardens is changing.   We want our homes to reflect more of the diversity of the planet and for them to be eco-friendly and support sustainability.  Some strive to turn their gardens into outdoor rooms, or soulful sanctuaries, or self-sustaining farms.  Planet Home and Garden wants to be on the edge of those changes, bringing you new ideas and hearing your stories.Jan Atwill, blog editor
