My garden has been a companion to me in many ways. It has been a place of forgiveness, when a plant I've not properly tended, and appears to die over the summer, magically sprouts up green and strong in the spring. This reminds me that my mistakes through life are not permanent; there is grace throughout our world. My garden is also a friend who keeps me humble. Over the years I've worked to attract a variety of birds and other wildlife to our back yard. I've been rewarded with visits from a remarkable variety of birds, including a small owl who visits regularly in the evening by our pond. I've also had the privilege of watching an industrious robin build her nest and raise her young in a shrub immediately outside my study window. I watched in wonder as she wove a perfect nest, then toiled relentlessly bringing worms to her growing, babies. These windows into the natural world remind me that I am but a tiny piece of this earth. I am simply part of a much larger, more complicated system. It is a privilege to be part of this world, and I must not take it for granted.
